About TGZ to TAR conversion

TGZ is a gzip-compressed wrapper format for TAR introduced by GNU in 1992, commonly known as the .tar.gz double-extension file, and is the standard format for Linux source packages and deployment packages. TAR is a Unix tape archive format introduced in 1979 that only bundles files without compression. This conversion meets demand when users need to extract the original uncompressed TAR archive.

This conversion is based on the 7-Zip engine. It decompresses the gzip compressed stream inside the TGZ, and outputs a TAR file that only bundles files without compression. It preserves the directory structure, Unix file permissions and symbolic links from the original TGZ. The output file is larger than the original TGZ file.

This conversion is suitable for workflows that require providing archives to older Unix systems without gzip decompression support, or for Linux development workflows that need to recompress files inside the package with other algorithms such as bzip2 or xz. The total uncompressed size may not exceed 256MB.

FAQ about TGZ → TAR

Does quality change after conversion?

This conversion is a lossless process that does not change the content of original files. It only decompresses and extracts the gzip compressed stream, outputs the complete content of the original TAR archive in full, with no content loss.

Will original file permissions be preserved?

The conversion completely preserves the Unix file permissions and symbolic links from the original TGZ. It directly extracts the original TAR data from the TGZ, and does not modify the metadata inside the archive.

What is the maximum single file size limit?

The maximum single uploaded file size is 50MB. Additionally, the total uncompressed size may not exceed 256MB, and the number of files may not exceed 1000. Processing will be rejected if any limit is exceeded.

Are files stored?

Files are not stored. Conversion is completed on the server side, and files are uploaded via HTTPS. After conversion is complete, the server immediately deletes the source file and the output file, and does not retain any data.
