About JPG to WebP conversion

JPG was released by the JPEG organization in 1992, it uses lossy compression based on DCT discrete cosine transform, and does not support alpha channels or animation. WebP was released by Google in 2010, it is based on VP8 intra-frame encoding, supports lossy, lossless compression and alpha channels, and produces smaller file sizes than JPG at the same visual quality. Conversion is required for adaptation to modern web publishing scenarios.

At the same visual quality, the converted WebP file size is approximately 70% of the original JPG, and the source file's EXIF metadata and color depth information are retained. Since the original JPG does not contain an alpha channel or animation, no corresponding content will be automatically generated after conversion. Adjusting the quality parameter directly changes the output file size and visual effect.

Converted WebP is compatible with all versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari 14 and above, and can be used directly for web image publishing. It cannot be opened normally on iOS 13 and earlier versions, and older desktop software. Confirm the target environment version before use.

FAQ about JPG → WebP

Will image quality decrease after conversion

Output quality can be controlled by adjusting the quality parameter. WebP achieves better visual performance than JPG at the same file size, and produces smaller output sizes than the original JPG at the same quality parameter, with no additional mandatory compression.

Is transparency preserved from the original image

Original JPG does not natively support alpha channels, so the converted output file does not contain transparency information. If your original image has a transparent background, confirm that the source format is not JPG before converting again.

What is the maximum single file size limit

The maximum file size for single-file conversion with this tool is 50MB, only one file can be converted at a time. The service is free of charge, output files have no watermarks, and no account registration is required.

Will uploading files leak my privacy

Files are uploaded to the server via HTTPS for conversion. After conversion completes, the server immediately deletes both the source file and output file, no files are stored, and no user file information is retained.
