About GIF to WebM conversion

GIF was released by CompuServe in 1987. It uses LZW lossless compression, is limited to a 256-color palette, supports multi-frame animation, and single animated GIF files are usually large in size. WebM is an open royalty-free container promoted by Google, which uses more efficient video encoding to reduce animated image file size.

The converted output WebM retains the original GIF loop playback logic, removes audio tracks with no substantive content, uses VP9 encoding, controls output quality with CRF constant quality mode, and the output file size is smaller than the original corresponding GIF file.

The converted output is suitable for modern web animated image display scenarios. It can play normally in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari 14.1 and above, and adapts to workflows on both mobile and desktop browsers.

FAQ about GIF → WebM

Will image quality change after conversion

The overall image quality after conversion is better than GIF of the same file size. WebM encoding is more efficient than GIF's LZW compression, and the same file size can carry more color and detail information, which meets general animated image display requirements.

Will the original frame rate be preserved

When the input GIF frame rate is higher than 20fps, the output frame rate will be limited to 20fps. When the input file width exceeds 640px, the output width will be fixed at 640px. All other parameters retain the original characteristics.

What is the maximum single file size limit

OKfmt processes only one file per conversion. The maximum single file size is 50MB, and the duration of the original GIF corresponding to the output WebM cannot exceed 10 minutes. Files exceeding the limit will be rejected.

Will my files be stored

Files are uploaded to the server via HTTPS for conversion. After conversion is complete, the server immediately deletes both the source file and the output file. No files are stored, and no user data is retained.
