About BMP to WebP conversion

BMP is an uncompressed bitmap format released by Microsoft in 1990, with a file size approximately 3 to 5 times larger than PNG of the same dimensions, and is only used in legacy Windows workflows. WebP is an image format released by Google in 2010 that supports both lossy and lossless compression, and can significantly reduce image file size, which creates the demand for this format conversion.

The converted WebP file has a much smaller size than the original BMP. The conversion preserves the original BMP's alpha channel and EXIF metadata, and the original BMP bit depth information is fully retained. Users can adjust the quality parameter to control the compression ratio and quality level of the output WebP.

The converted WebP can be used for front-end website asset display, and is compatible with Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari 14 and newer. The original BMP only fits certain legacy Windows workflows, and the output WebP is not compatible with older unupdated Safari versions.

FAQ about BMP → WebP

Will image quality decrease after conversion?

Image quality does not decrease when outputting in lossless mode, and compression quality can be customized in lossy mode. The output WebP is much smaller than the original BMP at the same quality level, and no unnecessary quality loss occurs.

Can alpha channel be preserved?

The alpha channel information from the original BMP can be fully preserved. Processing is based on the Sharp engine, which fully reads the channel data from the original BMP and writes it to the output WebP file, with no loss of transparency information.

What is the single file size limit?

The single file conversion limit for this tool is 50MB, and only one file can be converted per operation. The service is free, outputs watermark-free files, and can be used without account registration.

Will my files be stored?

User files are not stored. Files are uploaded to the server via HTTPS for conversion, and both the source file and output file are immediately deleted from the server after conversion completes, with no user file data retained.
