How to compress AVIF

  1. 1Upload your AVIF file by dragging, clicking, or pasting.
  2. 2Adjust quality settings if needed.
  3. 3Click 'Convert Now' and wait for the conversion to complete.
  4. 4Download your converted AVIF file.

About AVIF compression

Large file sizes of AVIF are usually caused by three factors: excessively high bitrate and quality parameters set during export, retention of a large amount of unnecessary image metadata, and use of a sub-optimal encoder implementation.

This tool optimizes the quantization mechanism based on the AV1 encoder. It can reduce the size of the original AVIF file by 30% to 50% at the same perceived quality. Adjusting the quality setting can balance file size and image details. Multiple compression operations will result in cumulative generational quality loss.

This compression meets performance budget requirements for front-end web development, and also satisfies the size limits for single image files as email attachments. For already highly compressed AVIF files, the output size may increase after compression.

FAQ about Compress AVIF

Will compression reduce image quality

With default parameters, the perceived quality of the original image is retained, and only redundant data is compressed. Lowering the quality setting will cause perceivable quality loss, and multiple compressions will accumulate quality loss.

How much file size can compression reduce

The size of non-overcompressed source files can be reduced by 30% to 50%. For already highly compressed AVIF files, compression cannot further reduce size, and may even increase the output file size.

What is the single file size limit

The maximum size of a single file supported by this tool is 50MB. Only one file can be processed per conversion. The service is free of charge, output files have no watermarks, and no account registration is required.

Will user files be stored

Files are uploaded to the server via HTTPS for conversion. After conversion is completed, the server immediately deletes both the source file and output file, and does not store any files to protect user privacy and security.
