About JPG to ICO conversion

JPG is a lossy compressed image format based on DCT discrete cosine transform released by JPEG organization in 1992. ICO is an icon container format used by Microsoft Windows, which can encapsulate multi-resolution bitmaps from 16px to 256px. Users need to convert ordinary images into icons for use, which gives rise to this conversion requirement.

The converted ICO file can encapsulate multi-resolution icon entries, supports storage compressed with PNG, retains the original 8-bit alpha channel of the input JPG, and does not support animation storage. EXIF metadata of the original JPG will not be retained. The output quality parameter controls the clarity after compression.

The converted ICO can be used to make website favicons and desktop shortcut icons for Windows systems, and is compatible with all versions of Windows operating systems from Windows XP to Windows 11.

FAQ about JPG → ICO

Will image quality change after conversion?

Conversion is processed based on the Sharp engine, and output compression quality can be customized. If you select the PNG compression entry, no additional cumulative compression artifacts will be generated, and there will be no obvious decline in image quality.

Will the alpha channel be preserved?

The original alpha channel will be preserved. The ICO format natively supports 8-bit alpha channels. The alpha channel information of the input JPG will be retained during conversion, and the output can be directly used for transparent icon scenarios.

What is the single file size limit?

The single file size limit of this conversion service is 50MB, and only one file can be converted at a time. The service is free of charge, output files have no watermarks, and no account registration is required to use it.

Will source files be retained?

Conversion is completed on the server side. Files are uploaded to the server via HTTPS, and the server immediately deletes both the source file and the output file after conversion is complete, and does not store any files.
