About PDF to TXT conversion

PDF was released by Adobe in 1993, and became the ISO 32000 open standard in 2008. It is the standard format for document exchange that can accurately preserve layout. TXT is a plain-text format with no formatting markup, compatible with all devices. This conversion is used when extracting dialogue or plain-text content from PDF.

After conversion, only text content from the PDF is retained. Timing information, all layout markup and styling information are discarded. Embedded JPG and PNG images in the original PDF are not retained in the output file. PDFs with a text layer can have their text content extracted directly.

The conversion result is compatible with all versions of Windows, macOS and Linux systems, and works with any text editing tool. It is suitable for extracting text content from PDF for secondary editing, or importing into corpus processing tools for text analysis.

FAQ about PDF → TXT

Does text quality change after conversion?

For PDFs with a text layer, text content is fully preserved after conversion, and only formatting information is removed. Scanned PDFs do not have a usable text layer, so no editable text content can be extracted.

Are headers and footers preserved?

Headers and footers are layout elements of PDF. After conversion to TXT, all layout information is discarded, but the text content of headers and footers is extracted and output along with the full document text.

What is the single file size limit?

The single file size limit for processing on this site is 50MB. Only one file can be converted per conversion. Files exceeding the limit cannot be submitted for processing.

Are my files stored on the server?

Files are uploaded to the server via HTTPS for conversion. After conversion completes, the server immediately deletes both the source file and the output file, and does not store any files.
