About PNG to GIF conversion

PNG uses DEFLATE lossless compression released in 1996, supporting 8-bit alpha channel and 48-bit color depth. GIF is an LZW compressed format released in 1987, limited to a 256-color palette, only supports 1-bit transparency, and supports multi-frame animation. Users convert PNG to GIF mostly to meet the requirements of animated GIF production.

After conversion, the original 8-bit alpha channel of PNG is changed to 1-bit transparency of GIF, and the original 48-bit color depth is compressed to adapt to the GIF 256-color palette. Single-frame PNG retains the original EXIF metadata after conversion. The converted GIF has a smaller file size than the original PNG, and the image quality changes predictably as the number of colors decreases.

The conversion result can be used for making single-frame materials for embedded web animated images, compatible with major browsers, Windows 7 and above, macOS 10.10 and above, and can be imported into Photoshop CS6 and above for secondary editing.

FAQ about PNG → GIF

Will image quality degrade after conversion

Image quality will change predictably after conversion. GIF only supports 256 colors, so the high color depth content of the original PNG will be compressed for adaptation, and colors beyond the gamut will be adjusted and replaced.

Will the original PNG transparency be preserved

The original PNG transparency will be preserved but its form changes. PNG supports 8-bit semi-transparent alpha channel, while GIF only supports 1-bit fully transparent/opaque. Semi-transparent areas will be adjusted to fully transparent or opaque.

What is the single file size limit

The current tool has a single file conversion limit of 50MB, and only supports converting one file at a time. Eligible files can all be submitted for conversion processing.

Will my files be stored

Files are uploaded to the server via HTTPS for conversion. After conversion is completed, the server immediately deletes both the source file and the output file, and does not store any files.
