About FLAC to MP3 conversion

FLAC is a free lossless audio coding that preserves all information of the original PCM, with a compression ratio of 40% to 60%. MP3 is a standardized lossy perceptual coding, all of its patents expired in 2017, and it is universally compatible with all playback devices. Users perform this conversion mostly to meet playback requirements on older devices.

Conversion is processed via FFmpeg. The MP3 bitrate can be adjusted between 64kbps and 320kbps. The sample rate and channel count of the original FLAC are preserved. Original Vorbis Comment metadata is converted to standard ID3 tags and written to the output MP3. Higher bitrates correspond to smaller sound quality loss.

This conversion is suitable for transcoding archived FLAC for storage on portable media players, and for use on devices such as car stereos and older portable players that do not support lossless formats. The maximum single file size is 50MB. This service is free of charge, the output has no watermarks, and no account registration is required.

FAQ about FLAC → MP3

Will the sound quality decrease after conversion

There will be sound quality loss. FLAC is a lossless coding that retains all original information, while MP3 is a lossy coding that discards part of the information that is insensitive to human hearing. Selecting the maximum 320kbps bitrate can reduce the degree of loss.

Will the original album art be preserved

The original album art will be preserved. During conversion, the embedded cover art information from the FLAC is automatically written to the ID3 metadata of the output MP3, and can be read and displayed normally by mainstream players.

What is the maximum file size limit

The maximum single file size for this tool is 50MB, and only one file can be converted per conversion task. Files exceeding the limit will be rejected by the system, and no conversion task can be initiated.

Do you store user files

We do not store user files. Files are uploaded to the server via HTTPS for conversion. After conversion is completed, the server immediately deletes both the source file and the output file, and does not store any files.
