About MP4 to GIF conversion

MP4 is a general-purpose MPEG-4 Part 14 container that can encapsulate H.264/H.265 video, designed for cross-platform audio and video storage and playback. GIF is a bitmap format released in 1987, it only supports a 256-color palette and can store multi-frame animation. Some older platforms do not support web video animation playback, which creates the need to convert MP4 to GIF.

The output GIF has a fixed maximum width of 640px and a maximum frame rate of 20fps. It retains the original video animation loop property and removes the original file audio track. Files are generated based on the LZW compression algorithm. Compared with the original MP4, the size change is related to the original video duration, and content with low color difference results in smaller file size.

This conversion is suitable for scenarios such as old forum signatures and web animations compatible with low-version browsers, and is not suitable for content publishing that requires retaining the original video color and audio. The converted GIF can be opened and played normally on all operating systems and all browsers.

FAQ about MP4 → GIF

Will image quality decrease after conversion

Image quality will decrease after conversion. GIF only supports 256 colors, an adaptive palette is generated during conversion, and rich color details from the original video will be lost. The output GIF has a fixed maximum frame rate of 20fps.

Will the original MP4 audio be preserved

Audio will not be preserved. The GIF format itself does not support storing audio tracks, it can only store animation composed of multiple static frames. Only the image content is retained in the output file after conversion.

What size of MP4 file is supported

For this conversion on OKfmt, the maximum single file size is 50MB, and the maximum duration of the original MP4 video is limited to 10 minutes. Files exceeding the limit will be rejected.

Will you store my files

User files are not stored. Conversion is completed on the server side, files are uploaded via HTTPS, and the server immediately deletes the source file and output file after conversion completes. No files are stored.
