About MP4 to MKV conversion

MP4 is a standard MPEG-4 Part 14 container that commonly encapsulates H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio, and is compatible with playback on all platforms. MKV is an open container released in 2002 that supports encapsulating multiple audio tracks, multiple subtitle tracks and chapter information. This conversion meets media archiving requirements.

This conversion runs based on FFmpeg. It retains the H.264/H.265 video encoding and AAC audio encoding from the source MP4 file, does not change the original resolution and frame rate, and can encapsulate embedded multiple audio track information from the source file into separate audio tracks for output.

Converted MKV files are suitable for archiving on media servers such as Plex and Jellyfin. They are not supported for native playback on outdated smart TVs and Android phones with unupdated firmware. Conversion is free of charge, and output files have no watermarks.

FAQ about MP4 → MKV

Will the image quality decrease after conversion

Original image quality will not be changed. The conversion only remuxes the container and does not re-encode the video. The original resolution, frame rate and video quality are all retained completely.

Can multiple audio tracks be retained

Multiple audio tracks embedded in the source MP4 are completely retained. The output MKV retains all independent audio tracks and supports track switching during playback.

What is the maximum single file size

This tool limits the maximum single file size to 50MB. Only one file can be converted at a time. Files exceeding the limit cannot be submitted for processing.

Will uploaded files be stored

User files will not be stored. Files are uploaded to the server via HTTPS for conversion. After conversion is completed, the source file and output file are deleted immediately, and no files are retained.
