About WMV to GIF conversion

WMV is a video codec released by Microsoft in 1999, which encapsulates VC-1 video and WMA audio in an ASF container. It was mostly used for corporate internal training and early rights distribution. GIF is a bitmap format released in 1987 that only supports 256-color palettes and multi-frame animation. This conversion extracts key frames from WMV to generate a general-purpose animated GIF.

The output GIF has a fixed maximum width of 640 pixels and maximum frame rate of 20fps, and uses LZW compression. The original WMV audio track is removed. If the original WMV resolution exceeds the limit, it will be scaled proportionally. A 256-color adapted palette is automatically generated, and the original video loop playback attribute is preserved.

The conversion result is suitable for web animation display, social media sharing, and product demonstration animation production. All conversions are based on FFmpeg for frame extraction and Sharp for palette generation. Output files have no watermarks, and the current service is free of charge.

FAQ about WMV → GIF

Does the quality change after conversion?

Quality changes for format adaptation. GIF only supports 256-color palettes, so color banding loss will occur in areas with rich colors in the original video. Output resolution will not exceed 640px, and frame rate will not exceed 20fps.

Will the original WMV audio track be preserved?

Audio tracks are not preserved after conversion. The GIF format itself does not support storing audio tracks, and only video frames from the original WMV are retained to generate the corresponding animation content.

Is there a size limit for uploaded files?

The maximum single file size is 50MB, and the duration of the original WMV video cannot exceed 10 minutes. Only one file can be converted per conversion. Files exceeding the limit will be rejected.

Will you store my converted files?

No files are stored. Files are uploaded to the server via HTTPS for conversion. After conversion completes, the server immediately deletes both the source file and the output file, and does not store any files.
